This Monday, Feb. 13, winners of the University of Dallas 2017 Regional Juried Ceramic Competition will be announced from among 45 featured artists that were selected by guest juror Virginia Marsh. The awards ceremony and a reception will take place in the Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery from 7 to 9 p.m. Earlier that evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Art History Auditorium, Marsh, who is an internationally acclaimed ceramics artist herself and current artist-in-residence at UD, will lecture on the featured works.

Started nearly a decade ago, the every-other-year, regional ceramics exhibit has become a premier competition for both new and established ceramicists. The featured artists exhibit provides visitors with an overview of contemporary ceramic art from ceramicists throughout the region; the exhibit closes Monday, March 13.

“I looked for artwork that expressed a clear idea and was executed well,” said Marsh of the general qualities she looked for to narrow the field down to 45 ceramicists from more than 100 submissions. “UD’s ceramics competition and exhibition presents the variety of excellent work being made in our community.”

Before coming to UD, Marsh taught ceramics for 20 years at the University of Louisville, served as editorial adviser to Chilton Book Company and published numerous articles and photos of her own work.

The competition was founded by internationally known ceramicist Dan Hammett, professor of art, so that ceramics artists would have a platform and professional gallery in which to display their work alongside that of their peers.

“As the creator of objects in clay, one quickly learns that the value is established by the artist and not the media. This exhibition provides our gallery patrons an opportunity to stay current with ceramics created in our region,” said Hammett, who is retiring at the end of this semester after more than four decades of service to the university. “The UD Regional Juried Exhibition would not happen without our undergraduate and graduate art students. Their greatest desire is that our community will learn and enjoy from their labor of love.”

In case you miss the Haggerty Gallery’s showing, the regional exhibit will travel to the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern State University in March and close at the end of April.
