Multilingual Poetry Night Celebrates Literature, Community
Oct 11, 2021

On Thursday, Oct. 7, students and professors at the University of Dallas participated in the second annual Multilingual Poetry Night. The evening began with a talk on translation by Postdoctoral Fellow of Spanish Janet Hendrickson, Ph.D., BA ’03, and continued with students and professors reading poems in multiple languages, including French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. Organized by the Spanish Club (led by officers Bianca Aridjis-Olivos, BS ’23, Mary Geddie, BA ’23, Emily Alvarado, BA ’23, and Maddie Clements, BS ’23, with club sponsor Affiliate Instructor of Modern Languages Irina Rodríguez, Ph.D.), this event brought the UD community together through a celebration of literature and community.

The multilingual nature of the event testifies to the rich heritage and research interests of UD professors and students. English translations of the poems were projected on a screen behind readers; some of the poems were even translated to English by UD students and professors. Students and professors of language at UD enjoy sharing their love of poetry with the broader university community and invite everyone to join them next year.
