James Patrick III, ThD, friend and former professor of the University of Dallas, passed away on March 3 at age 90.
Patrick was an architect and theologian, beginning his academic career in architecture after a period of service in the U.S. Army. A convert from the Episcopal Church, he came to the University of Dallas in 1975 and taught in the Department of Theology. Patrick also served the university as department chair, academic dean and director of graduate programs.
During his tenure as director of graduate programs from 1975 to 1977, Patrick oversaw the newly minted Institute of Philosophic Studies, previously named the Willmoore Kendall Program before 1972. He also served as the dean of the University of Dallas’ Constantin College of Liberal Arts. An ambitious, active force in the Catholic intellectual tradition, Patrick founded and led the erstwhile College of Saint Thomas More in Fort Worth, which operated from 1981 to 2014, as well as the Lewis-Tolkien Society and the Thomas More Institute, which are still extant.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 21, at Mater Dei Catholic Church in Irving at 7 p.m.
Please join us in praying for Professor James Patrick’s soul and for comfort to those who loved him.
