Best Bets: Events to Anticipate, Week of 10/10/16

Charity Week officially ends Saturday with three final Oz-themed events to close off the week-long fundraising campaign: the Race for the Rubies 5k at 9 a.m. on the Mall; the Powderpuff Emerald Bowl at noon on the rugby pitch; and a Charity Week Social at 8 p.m. in Braniff foyer. How much will Charity Week raise this year? Check back with us on Monday.

Monday

Though your mailman won’t be working on this federal holiday (Columbus Day, in case you’ve been so immersed in studying that you’ve lost track of time), UD’s stateside campus is still open, and classes are still in session.

Tuesday

What do you know about Odysseus, king of Ithaca, one of Greek mythology’s most legendary Trojan War heroes and the main hero of Homer’s Odyssey? Louise Cowan Chair in the Humanities and Professor of Literature Bainard Cowan presents “The Confessionals of Odysseus,” with a lecture by UD alumnus Nalin Ranasinghe, MA ’86, professor of philosophy at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, from 5:15 to 7 p.m. in SB Hall’s Multipurpose Room.

Wednesday

Today, alumnus David Fiegenschue, BA ’76, creative mastermind behind the Irving-based logo and web design firm FigDesign — named one of 100 Blue Ribbon Small Businesses by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — opens a 30-year retrospective exhibit of his company’s design work. The exhibit, FigDesign@30, will be on display through Friday, Nov. 11, in SB Hall’s O’Halloran Atrium and features a selection of 60 logos dating back to the early ’80s.

Thursday

Alumni, parents, family and friends are invited to join President Keefe and the UD faculty for this year's Alumni & Family Weekend, which begins today and lasts through Sunday, Oct. 16. Classes ending in ’1 and ’6 are celebrating their reunions this year.

Friday

Enjoy this Friday, because not every day is Fall Reading Day. What does this mean? No undergraduate, Braniff or Neuhoff School of Ministry classes. Study hard for those midterms!

In celebration of 50 years of graduate education at UD, the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts presents an alumni panel discussion, “The Legacy & Future of a Liberal Arts Education,” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in SB Hall’s Multipurpose Room. The panel discussion continues into Saturday, Oct. 15, beginning at 10 a.m. that day in the same location.
