Junior politics (formerly economics!) major Aubrey Wieberg was at the head of a student-led effort to bring the Big Event — a day of service in the community around UD — to the UD campus. Big Event was started at my alma mater, Texas A&M, as a way for students to engage the community outside the university and give back to those in need. I remember participating in it as an undergraduate; it was always a high point of the fall semester. Wieberg and her team of fellow UD students borrowed the idea — which has now spread to hundreds of colleges across the country — and put their own UD spin on the event. I met with them for several months, and was truly impressed by the enthusiasm and energy they had for this project. In particular, the UD version of Big Event was an opportunity to bring our entire UD community together to serve the larger Irving community. Faculty, alumni and students joined teams to assist those in our community with outdoor jobs such as leaf raking, weeding, painting, etc. Big Event took place Saturday, Nov. 6. Maybe some of you were there — and for those that aren’t here in Irving, perhaps you can write to us with your own stories of service. Already, our students on the Rome campus have taken up the cause and are planning their own Big Event in Rome!
